Brainstorm: Freedom Writers

Tolerance means the ability to put up with others' beliefs, attitudes & cultures, even when you don't agree / its different from your own.

Overcoming Adversity - pushing through something difficult or dangerous.

Brainstorm: A student read his diary to the teacher + class

    - His family was evicted - He feels at home at school in Ms. Gruwell's class + Overcoming diversity: he has come to school despite being evicted.

- Music: Soft, Slow

- Lighting: Bright, Natural, creates an atmosphere of warmth, happiness, Welcome space

- Camera: Close up, when he says he's home - shows the audience his emotion

    - Dolly shot - from close-up to mid then back to close up. Shows the viewer that the student is surrounded, supported by his classroom family

                - Shallow Focus - Speaker is sharp, those around him are blurred to make him the focus, most important.

Brainstorm: Miep Gies came to talk to the classroom about hiding Anne Frank + her family. Marcus stands and tells her that she's his hero. Miep says that they're the heroes.

Camera Shot/angle/movement/focus:  Pan Shot - Used to show all the students are there and they are all focused + listening-not distracted like previous scenes. Tracking mid-shot: Marcus when he speaks

Lighting: Bright, Cold, Natural. = Back lit-creates a halo effect making her seem angelic or god-like. This works because the students see Miep like a god because she saved the franks.

Music:  Subtle quiet, builds into volume + intensity, used to heighten the viewer's emotions.
